MARYLAND NON-SMOKING LAW
As we all know, the State of Maryland has adopted a no-smoking law that does not allow smoking in public places, such as BARS, RESTAURANTS, POOL ROOMS, etc.
The official APA rule on this ban is:
Any Members wanting to take a smoke break outside, must do it before their match begins or after their match is finished. All play must be continuous, from the start of play to the end. If one of the players takes a smoke break after the match has started, the match point(s) will be forfeited to the opponent team. In the event that both players agree to hold up the match and take a smoke break together, the match will be considered forfeited and neither team will get the point(s) for that specific match.
Any and all remaining matches are to be played out in their entirety.

The world’s largest amateur pool league is expanding oversees to Japan. In late-December, the American Poolplayers Association (APA) granted Noriyuki Nanjo approval to begin promoting and administering APA Leagues in Tokyo as the Japanese Poolplayers Association (JPA).
Nanjo, a former APA member, began playing pool in the APA Leagues in Washington State while attending college. “The APA League was a great place for me to learn about the game of pool and meet many new and interesting people.”
Upon graduation, he inquired about starting an APA franchise in Japan. After months of finalizing details and attending extensive training, Nanjo’s franchise was approved.
The JPA will operate under the same guidelines as APA Pool Leagues and will utilize The Equalizer® handicap and scoring system. JPA teams will be eligible to qualify for the APA National Team Championships held annually in August at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The first JPA League is scheduled to begin in February.
“We’re very excited to bring the pool league concept to Japan. The sport is extremely popular in Asia and we hope the success of the JPA will eventually help us tap into that popularity throughout the rest of the continent,” said APA President Reneé Poehlman.
In 2008 the local APA Prize Fund increased to $350,000+ in Cash and Awards! Our Tri-Annuals increased to $60,000 Cash and Awards Payout every session, with the increases going to the “bottom” 80% of the teams (those teams who aren’t lucky enough to advance to our Annual Las Vegas Qualifier Tournaments).
We also introduced our very popular ~ $25,000.00 Gold Cup Trophies and Money Orders Awards Program that recognizes each 1st Place end-of-regular-session team (in Divisions with 6 or more teams)! These awards are presented to the 1st Place Team just prior to the Divisional Playoff Finals. The 2 teams then rack 'em up and shoot it out for the right to advance to the Tri-Annual! 1st and 2nd Place Trophies are also awarded that night to the two teams competing in the Finals.
LAS VEGAS ... AUGUST 10 Days of Heaven-on-Earth for APA Poolplayers!

So, even if your team doesn't make it there through local competition, you can still win a free trip and join about 10,000 APA poolplayers that invade the Riviera Hotel & Casino each August! ...[Read more]

Over the past 15 years, the price of consumer products and services has skyrocketed. In 1993, a gallon of gas averaged $1.11, a postage stamp cost $0.29, and the average price for a new home was $147,700. My how things change! One thing that hasn’t changed since 1993 is the cost of your APA membership.
